Why I write from Sheryl Brennan. Have you ever put away an activity for a while that you REALLY enjoyed doing, then picked it up again one day and asked yourself, "Self, why in the world did we quit doing this?" That is exactly what happened to me in July of 2007. I had just graduated from college with my degree in Business Management. It took me ten years to earn that degree. I should have been breathing a sigh of relief. Instead, I felt incomplete. Like a part of my life was still missing. So, I did the only thing I could to compose my thoughts and figure out why I felt this way. I wrote. Over the course of days, my journal entries went from entries about how I was feeling to new characters that popped into my head and pleaded for their stories to be told. In six short weeks, I had completed a historical romance manuscript and was working on the sequel. I was writing during my lunch hours, when I got home from work (in between homework, dinner, etc.), and from the time the kids went to bed until sometimes 1 and 2am! The next day, I would get up and do it all over again. On the weekends, I would sneak in as much writing time as I possibly could. And you know what? I COULDN‘T HAVE BEEN HAPPIER. It had been nearly 20 years since I put on my writers hat, but in that short period of time, my world started to come into focus. This was what I had been missing all those years. So now, I am making up for lost time. The ideas and characters just keep coming. From the American South, Ireland, Wales, and Italy. Each one has a unique tale just waiting to be written and I cannot wait to share them all with you.

I fell in love with Mr. Darcy, at the age of thirteen. Pride & Prejudice had been my first true adventure into the politics of Romance with all its twists and turns and I was hooked! From that point on I read anything thrown in my path, continually searching for the same happy ending I had found with Elizabeth and Darcy. The complexities and nuance of a character‘s relationship never ceases to fascinate me, and being a history buff, I automatically gravitated towards historicals. Yet, as much as I take pleasure in reading Romance novels, I‘ve always possessed a driving ambition to create my own love stories; to fashion a world of my own making, and conceive of my own characters. About three years ago I tried my hand at writing historical fiction. Not historical romance. It was a total disaster. I couldn‘t get past the first several pages. After reading a lot of paranormal romance and hisotrical romance, Regency especially, I thought I‘d give it a try. Like a lot of people who think they can write I said, ‘Heck I can do this. I can write a romantic story. It can‘t be all that hard.‘ I tried my hand or I should say more accurately say my fingertips, I was using a computer. It was harder then I thought. Then again anything worth doing right is going to be hard. Give up wasn‘t an option for me. I knew I could do it. Even after getting rejection letters I kept trying. For years I had a story running around in my head
and I thought this was the time to write it. Turned out it was a historical romance. And it sold. Guess I‘ve found my niche. Historical romance. And as a friend told me, ‘Lindsay, write what you know. Military themed stories.‘ So that‘s what I‘m focusing on, at least for right now. Who knows what the future will bring. Both in my writing and contracts. Hopefully lots. And for those who know me, SORRY but no Collies in my stories-yet.

I believe I was destined to be interested in history. One of my distant ancestors, Thomas Aubert, reportedly sailed up the St. Lawrence River to discover Canada some 26 years before Jacques Cartier?s 1534 voyage. Another relative was a 17th Century ?King?s Girl,? one of a group of young unmarried girls sent to New France as brides for the settlers there. A former journalist and lifelong Celtophile, I enjoyed a previous career as a reporter/editor for a small chain of community newspapers before returning to my first love, romantic fiction. My stories usually include an Irish setting, hero or heroine, and sometimes all three. My first novel, In Sunshine or in Shadow, is set in post-Famine Ireland and is available from Highland Press.
