New Garage Door Installation

Fitting a Door That Lasts Here

Celtichearts supplies and installs garage doors across Long Beach. The install matters as much as the door, and near the water the specification matters more than the styling.

The Measure

We measure the opening width and height, the headroom above it, and the side room each side, then look at the condition of the jamb and header. Rot or soft timber at the jamb gets dealt with before anything is ordered, because that is what the whole assembly anchors into.

We also ask how exposed the garage is. A door two blocks from the water with no shelter and one six miles inland are not the same job, and that changes the recommendation more than any style preference.

The Specification

Material. Steel for most homes, with attention to gauge and coating. Aluminium where exposure is severe, because it does not rust.

Insulation. Polyurethane where the budget allows, because it bonds to both skins and stiffens the section, which makes the door quieter and better at holding its shape.

Hardware. Galvanized or coated track, hinges, brackets and fasteners, with sealed nylon rollers. This is the specification that decides how the door ages here.

Glazing. Optional, and a genuine trade-off between light and both security and insulation.

The Install

  1. Remove the old door, track and hardware.
  2. Inspect and repair the jamb and header while the opening is clear.
  3. Fit the new sections, squared and levelled, with the track secured to the framing.
  4. Fit springs sized to the measured weight of the new door and wind them to the correct turns.
  5. Fit and align the opener, or refit the existing one with travel limits and force settings retuned.
  6. Balance test with the opener disconnected, then both safety reversal tests.

The Opener

If yours is sound and post-1993 it can usually stay, though it needs retuning to the new door weight. If it is being replaced, California has required battery backup on openers sold or installed here since July 2019, so the new unit will include it.

Afterwards

Keep the bottom seal seated, rinse the door with fresh water now and then, and have the cables checked yearly. Near the water that is the difference between a door that lasts and one that does not.
